The Most Common Form of Elder Abuse – Self Neglect
As a mandatory reporter of elder abuse, we are obligated to report any single case to the Adult Protection Services (APS). This includes the most common form of elder abuse, self-neglect. When included statistically as a form of elder abuse, self-neglect represents the highest percentage of cases, 40-50% of cases are reported to APS. Self-neglect can take the form of failure to adhere to medication regimens, malnutrition, unsafe or unclean living conditions, or lack of personal hygiene. Self-neglect may result from dementia, an illness, malnutrition, over-medication, depression, poverty, or isolation.
You can easily begin positive measures to help seniors who create these situations for themselves. Among the major reason for self-neglect, the interrelationship between depression and isolation is believed to be one of the biggest. Psychologists have documented a clear cut correlation between social support and life satisfaction. As people age, some experience a declining ability to drive or get out in the community. Friends and loved ones pass away and are not easily replaced. In today’s society, many seniors live alone rather than with family. All of these factors combined to increase the risk of social isolation for seniors. As life satisfaction decreases, the risk for self-neglect or depression greatly increases.
Incorporating home care services into seniors lives can help them without compromising their sense of independence. As a home care provider, our certified caregivers can monitor and assist with your loved one’s health conditions, nutrition, personal hygiene, and safety. The companionship that a caregiver provides eliminates any social isolation and self-neglect. The vast majority of seniors today prefer a coordinated home care approach because staying at home preserves their independence and choices.
