How to Prevent Falls
Falls are a leading cause of injury and death in adults over age 65. One of every three people in this age group fall each year in the United States and half of them are repeat fallers.
The physical consequences can be anything from minor to severe such as bruises, fractures, head trauma, and even life threatening injuries.
Help your loved one prevent falls with these tips:
- Begin a regular exercise program to help increase strength and improve balance
- Ask their doctor or pharmacist to review medications and over the counter medications to reduce side effects and interactions
- Have their eyes checked at least once a year
- Remove rugs or use double sided strong tape or a non slip backing so rugs don’t slip
- Keep appliance cords and wires next to the wall or out of the way
- Keep things used often on the lower shelves of cabinets or waist level
- Put a non slip rubber mat or self stick strips one the floor of the tub or shower
- Place grab bars inside the tub and next to the toilet
- Wear shoes both inside and outside the house. Never go barefoot
- Keep emergency numbers in large print near each phone
- Put a phone near the floor in case of a fall
